Terry Staten is a musician and woodwind repair technician based out of Dayton, Ohio. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Education at Wright State University in 2015 and then an Associates in Applied Science in Instrument Repair Technology from Western Iowa Tech in 2018. After finishing repair school, Terry joined the team at Hauer Music in Centerville, Ohio where he honed his skills as an instrument repair technician learning from Tim Pence. In 2021 Terry then left to work at Buckeye Brass and Winds in Plain City, Ohio where he was later advanced to Lead Woodwind Technician overseeing the operations of the woodwind shop and training younger technicians in the craft of woodwind repair. During his time at Buckeye, Terry studied with Joel Straubinger of Indianapolis to receive his Straubinger Pad Certification and Paul Rabinov in Los Angeles to become an authorized Muramatsu Flute technician. Terry has also had the privilege to work with other experienced technicians to further his skills and looks forward to more training in the future. Terry is passionate about learning and developing his skills. He is always looking for the next tool or technique to help his clients advance their musicianship through an efficient and optimized instrument.
As a musician, Terry remains active in the Southwest Ohio region. He has performed in venues all across the Midwest and East Coast including Carnegie Hall, Rochester International Jazz Festival (opening for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy), Exit 0 International Jazz Festival, The Glenn Miller Festival, US Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, NASA Biennial Conference, multiple OMEA conferences, and has played with groups such as the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic Concert Band, The O'Jays (Last Stop on the Love Train Tour), Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Dayton Jazz Orchestra, Sinclair Community Jazz Ensemble (with guests Anat Cohen, Mike Smith of The Count Basie Orchestra, and Rusty Burge), along with numerous regional professional pit orchestras, wedding bands, and big bands. Terry can be heard on a variety of recordings including the film soundtrack for "The Origins of Wit and Humor", trumpeter Greg Wing's album "Reflections on a Grateful Journey", and Gem City's album "Redux".
Terry is also a passionate educator and clinician in instrument repair. He has presented for the Capital University Band Director's Work Shop, the Ohio Music Education Association Conference alongside Dr. Shelley Jagow, and most recently at the National Association for Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians Associate regional conference in Sioux City, Iowa. He also works with local band directors and musicians who are interested in the trade for basic training to get them started into the field. Terry is a member of NAPBIRT and Phi Mu Alpha.
